Much like in my review for Disney's superhero movie "Sky High", where I compared it to all the other superhero family fare movies made, I will compare "Advent Children" to all the other anime flicks that come out of Japan and how this one is, luckily, alittle different. This movie follows the storyline of the PS1 masterpiece "Final Fantasy VII". It's been two years since the Earth destroyed the coming catastrophe and now a man of suprising power named Kadaji is stirring up a gang, a virus, and the disembered parts of god-like demon known as Jenova that came to earth in FF: VII to destroy it.
What is Kadaji planning to do with these parts? Why bring back Jenova's son, the hell-banished demon Sephiroth of course. The only thing that stands in Kadaji's way is the remants of the Shinra company and the group lead by Cloud Strife. Too bad Cloud is in the middle of a mid-life crisis briought on by the untimely death of his beloved Aerith and his best friend Zach. He blames himself for not being able to stop their deaths and is too busy wallowing in self-pity to notice his "family" that is still alive. But don't worry they arrive in time to knock some sense into him and be part of some awesome battle scenes.
The animation of the movie is.........well I'm not sure I can sum it up. I'll say this: it is probably the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. Ever.
The things that keep this movie from greatness? The fact that the script is tried-and-true anime: you've got your comic relief (in the form of a pair of hired muscle for Shinra), you've got your sweet love scenes between Aerith's ghost and Cloud, and you've got your plain old action dialogue. The best thing about this script, and really 99% of all Japanese scripts? It's throughly enjoyable and entertaining, from the winding plot to the wonderous animation to the breath-taking fight scenes. It's all good in the land of the Rising Sun.
