Step Up: B+

A deliriously enjoyable and epic up-from-the-gutters song and dance movie. Step Up doesn't seem to poised to be any good but trust me, I might have been skeptical in the first half-hour but by the end, oh boy. The story of two people, two dancers, Tyler (Channing Tatum) and Nora (Jenna Dewan), who come together and make some scorching hot dance routines. In the beginning you'll probably nod off a few times between dance numbers, the script is just oozing that bad "After School Special" vibe but then things start to heat up and come together. The actors, both lead and supporting, find their voices and soon the atmosphere is just pulsing; this is what Raise Your Voice wanted so desperately to create. When I said epic at the start of this review I meant epic: love stories interlayed over a ghetto-fabulous-redux story intertwined with twisted family life and most of it drenched in a post-Fame look at the arts. Still we all came for the dancing and boy is it good. Channing Tatum jumps into routine effortlessly and the cheorgraphed scenes make you want to just jump with joy (especially the final number). The script may buckle now and then but it's suprisingly decent and top it all off with a solid cast and fantastic rhythm and you've got the suprise of the summer: one fetching ride, yo.
